APPEARANCE:
In terms of physique, Faustein is 170.2 cm tall (5’ 7”), weighs 67.1 kg (148 lb.), and is reasonably toned enough to handle normal, everyday activities like any other totally average, non-athletic yet non-sedentary, young man of his age. That said, since he has little to no body fat across his entire body from head to toe, all his physical features are well-defined, and his musculature seems more toned than it is to the casual observer. Additionally, he has a somewhat tanned skin tone which is coarse and dry to the touch, crimson red eyes, and whitish-green hair which he usually styles in an upwards spiking, brush-like manner, with two long locks hanging down loosely over his face. Just like his skin, his hair is also coarse and dry to the touch. Besides this, his entire form is unremarkable except for his wide forehead, high-set cheekbones, gently tapered chin, and the various blemishes as well as scars that mar his body overall.

Regarding attire choices, Faustein tends to keep his as simple and practical as possible, though he does tend to succumb to his flair for the dramatic and thus occasionally adds a few embellishments to his basic attire. When he is at home alone, he tends to wear a simple t-shirt and shorts combo with no footwear. However, if he were to entertain guests at home whose status is significant in some way, then he tends to go with a semi-formal polo shirt and jeans with regular sandals for footwear.  When out and about, but not at work or school, he prefers to wear a simple t-shirt with a hoodie over it and jeans with the usual socks and sneakers.

For work, he dons the usual physician-scientist’s outfit consisting of their signature long, white lab coat with a formal full-sleeved shirt beneath it above and a pair of formal pants below along with the usual socks and formal, patent leather shoes for footwear. Besides that, for formal occasions, Faustein wears the usual formal, three-piece suit ensemble with the formal shirt inside for the main outfit and his favorite patent leather formal shoes along with their usual socks for footwear while in all other situations, he simply goes with whatever attire is appropriate for said situation (e.g., weather-resistant clothing for inclement weather, the Nagatenjouki Academy uniform for school, etc.). Finally, the series of accessories and equipment he uses in various situations are almost always distributed evenly across his person since he either secures them in various holsters that he straps to various parts of his outfit or stores them in his backpack. Naturally, Faustein always makes sure to wear all of these outfits over the usual male undergarments as per the norms and standards of common societal decorum (because he is a budding mad physician-scientist and not some strange pervert).

Faustein can almost always keep himself totally detached and coldly logical in any situation and thus, can almost never be overwhelmed by the emotional milieu of any situation or the elements therein.  

Persistent Researcher:
Faustein has the innate persistence to see any venture he undertakes from start to finish, for better or worse, and thus, he can surmount almost any setback that confronts him anytime during this process.

Focused Investigator:  
Faustein can tune out almost all distractions of any kind and thus, he can almost always maintain a laser-like focus on achieving those goals that are most crucial to the successful resolution of any situation.

Faustein’s predilection towards cold logic and reason is so predominant in his psyche that it is exceptionally difficult for him to comprehend and sympathize with the emotional needs/suffering of others.

Tactlessness:
Due to his inability to empathize with others and because he considers being euphemistic a waste of time, Faustein’s thoughts, words, and deeds almost always have a painful level of bluntness to them.

Inability to Forget:
Since he has photographic memory, Faustein cannot forget the details of any of his experiences no matter how traumatic they were for him, and this tends to hinder his operational efficacy in some cases.

HISTORY:  
Faustein was born to a fully German man named “Siegfried Faustein” and a fully Japanese woman named “Izanami Kuroyakushi”. They had met during a cutting-edge scientific symposium held in the U.S. in the past and later became forever entangled with each other. In due course, they brought their only son, Faustein, into the world and since he was their only child, they named him next in line to the leadership of business conglomerate own and operated by the alliance created by the formal merger between Siegfried’s family and that of Izanami. Faustein was a promising prospect in many regards right from childhood due to the various innate talents and genetic perks he had inherited from both his parents.

For instance, he had his father’s innately higher mental fortitude and higher mental stability along with his innately higher strategic/tactical prowess as well as his aptitude incisive reasoning of both the inductive and deductive forms while from his mother he inherited a photographic memory, superlative resourcefulness, keen observational skills, and high aptitude for technological manipulation. However, along with these gifts also came a handful of downsides such as his mother’s innate stubborn streak, lack of significant physical stamina, and inability to forget his experiences due to having photographic memory as well as his father’s ocular albinism, lack of empathy, and painfully egregious tactlessness. Aside from this, he also inherited an insatiable craving for ever more knowledge from both his parents and thus, because of all these perks and genetic gifts, he began to demonstrate a high aptitude for all the various STEM subjects as well as certain areas of business early on. However, along with these gifts, there also eventually developed an alarming dark side to his curiosity.

This led him to engage in the performance of certain disturbing experiments, albeit simplistic ones given his young age. So, in the hopes of permanently curtailing this dark side in its infancy and to provide a superlative system of academia for their only son, Faustein’s parents sent him off to Academy City at the age when he was ready to enter elementary school and ensured that they enrolled him in a rather prestigious one after his arrival there. Thus, Faustein’s life and career in Academy City began and thanks to his many intellectual talents and aptitudes, he quickly succeeded in making a name for himself and entering the ranks of the elites among the intelligentsia of his elementary school. This was also the time when he began to undergo the ESPer Power Development Curriculum just as many other ESPers were doing and had been doing for a long time till then. Due to that, eventually, he managed to awaken his ESPer ability and  as per the instructions of the researchers overseeing his ESPer development, it became christened with the name “Life Hacker”.

So, his life went on and soon, he began showing steady, progressive improvement in his ESPer ability development as well and thanks to all these achievements, he managed to graduate among the crème de la crème of his class and entered one of the prestigious middle schools in the city. It was during this time he spent in that middle school that he applied for and got admission to a probationary internship with a certain research lab called Utagawashi Pharmaceutical Research Lab and successfully managed to make a name for himself and build an excellent rapport with his superiors therein over the course of his work there due to its consistently superlative quality. Beyond this, just as he had in his elementary school, Faustein began to excel in both his studies and at the middle school level of his ESPer power development training as well. However, all was not rosy for him during this time as due to his academic excellence and the promise he showed in his ESPer training, there came a series of unfortunate events in which he began to be exploited by certain classmates whom he had come to consider as close friends and so, came to realize that they had befriended him simply to take advantage of him, only to betray him treacherously later.

With that, his faith in those around him was shattered almost irreparably, but instead of exacting terrible vengeance upon them, he merely cut them off without warning or preamble and then threw himself entirely into his academic pursuits, his internship with Utagawashi Pharmaceutical Research Lab and into the various exercises in ESPer power training assigned to him by the researchers overseeing his development. Consequently, he managed to make even greater progress in all these areas, but at the rather high cost of his physical prowess development to the point that he had just enough for basic everyday activities and maybe up to and including light exertion (i.e., such as in P.E. class at school) above and beyond everyday activities, the latter only on a good day. As a result of his increased level of excellence over the rest of his middle school years, by the time his middle school graduation rolled around, Faustein had managed to not only secure a place for himself among the intellectual elite of his graduating class, but also was promoted from a probationary intern to a full intern, though only a junior one.

The other reward he received for his excellence in all these areas was his successful admission to the even more prestigious Nagatenjouki Academy which was apparently one of the best high schools in all of Academy City. However, there were also those events that marred this series of successes, and these ranged from unprovoked stray dog pack attacks which left him with his current caniphobia to occasional random encounters with Skill Outs during those times he was trying to find places to practice the use of his ESPer ability outside of his formal power training course. Despite the injuries and mental trauma Faustein sustained from these encounters, there was some degree of benefit to him from these. These were things such as his encounter with the famous physician known as the Heaven Canceller who later became his inspiration for pursuing the path of the physician-scientist and greater incentive born in him to try to develop more combat applicable uses for his ESPer power in addition to just ones that would be convenient for everyday usage. That said, unlike the Heaven Canceller, Faustein went down the path of dark/mad science instead, once again reawakening that hidden dark side to his curiosity that had remained suppressed till then which, in turn, caused him to start asking for and receiving training in the medicosurgical subjects as well from the researchers overseeing his ESPer ability development because both parties realized that it would be crucial to the effective usage of his ESPer ability.

As he continued to wade through mixed ocean of benefits and setbacks while excelling in both academia and his ESPer power development training, Faustein eventually stood among the best of his class at Nagatenjouki Academy by the time his senior year came around in the present day. Along with this, he also managed to be promoted from a junior intern to a senior intern at the Utagawashi Pharmaceutical Research Lab during this time and even managed to impress his superiors there enough that they began grooming him to eventually take on a formal researcher’s position at some point in the future which has brought him into contact and eventual semi-close acquaintance with a certain research subject at said lab who is called “Masaki Chiyo” who, along with a select few others, has been instrumental in bringing him out of his shell to some degree thus far (though he is still very much hesitant to form truly deep connections with those around him due to his bad experiences with people in the past). This brings his story to the present day and from here, it remains to be seen what his life will throw at him, but it is sure to be both an interesting ride as well as a mixed bag of experiences henceforth.

Life Hacker – Functions:
Faustein’s ESPer power/ability is called “Life Hacker” because it allows him to “hack” into the human body, specifically his own human body, albeit only for two functions. These two functions share a common mechanism of temporarily hijacking control of the natural biomaterial growth and modification processes inherent to his body. This, in turn, allows him to induce the temporary expenditure and/or hyperstimulation of the biomaterial present in it for the purposes of on-demand growth and control of new and/or extra biomaterial. One of these is biomaterial golem creation and command while the other is generic self-healing that takes the form of wound repair, and he can access as well as freely use all basic tissue types of the human body for the execution of these two functions as he sees fit. The biomaterial golem creation function that lets him freely create and control organic constructs known as biomaterial golems each of which he can construct specifically to suit the exact needs of whatever situational challenges happen to be confronting him such as espionage/remote reconnaissance, guard duty, direct combat (of offensive, defensive, and supportive varieties), and other miscellaneous needs (e.g., transport, retrieval, scaling heights, stopping falls, etc.).

For the purposes of streamlining, expediting, and focusing the process of creation and control of these to a greater degree, Faustein has divided the plethora of forms possible into three distinct categories based on weight ranges. These are: Small (e.g., up to and including 10.9 kg max), Medium (e.g., 11.0 kg - 19.9 kg max), and Large (e.g., 20.0 kg - 27.0 kg max), and he usually models these golems off real creatures found in nature with some degree of artistic license thrown into the mix. There are two modes of biomaterial golem creation: the first is the limb-based and the other is de novo creation. The appendage-based mode allows him to either detach one or more of his natural limbs (either fully or partially) after which he can turn it into a limb-type biomaterial golem or transmit his bioenergy to limb(s) that he has lost due to some other source (e.g., someone lopping off his limb(s) to cripple him) for the purposes of turning it/them into limb-type biomaterial golem(s). In contrast, the de novo biomaterial golem creation mode allows him to sprout the biomaterial golem(s) of his choice from anywhere in or on his body from scratch instead of turning his existing limbs into biomaterial golem(s). This de novo process appears and functions like how cancerous tumor masses tend to when they form in the human body with the exception that the entire process can be activated at will and can reach completion far more rapidly.

On the other hand, the generic self-healing function allows him to induce wound repair ahead of the body’s naturally determined schedule and biorhythms for this process. In a similar manner to how he did with the biomaterial golem creation and control, Faustein has also divided the wound repair extents possible into the three distinct categories for the same purpose as in the golem creation too, except that this division is based on a modified version of the standard medicosurgical wound severity grading. These are:

• Minor  (e.g., minor cuts, needlestick injuries, contusions, abrasions, 1st degree burns, minor frostbite, capillary level circulatory system damage, and body mass loss of up to and including 10.9 kg max)

• Major  (e.g., puncture and penetrating wounds, partial avulsions, 3rd degree burns, major frost bite, non-major arterial/venous level circulatory system damage, and body mass loss of 20.0 kg - 27.0 kg max).

Life Hacker – Weaknesses & Limitations:
The first and most important weakness and limitation of this ability as with all other ESPer abilities is that of expenditure of physical and mental stamina to activate and maintain its two functions as well as the various applications therein with external stressors halving the control time and doubling the creation time due to the extra strain imposed on his physical and mental stamina by these stressors. Consequently, regardless of which function Faustein is using and/or the application(s) being deployed, without any stressors involved in the equation, he always requires up to 5 seconds max (completion of “Small” golem creation or Minor level healing), or up to 10 seconds max (completion of “Medium” golem creation or Moderate level healing), or up to 30 seconds max (completion of “Large” golem creation or Major level healing). The maintenance aspect (i.e., the amount of time Faustein can keep his golems alive and control them effectively) only comes into play for his golems since they are constructs and for these, he can maintain the “Small” category units for up to 10 minutes max before having to stop for rest, the “Medium” category units for up to 7 minutes max before having to stop for rest, and the “Large” category units for up to 5 minutes max before having to stop for rest. This rest period is always equal to the amount of time he spent controlling the category of golems used in the situation at hand.

Additionally, for the golems aspect, Faustein can never produce and control more than 27.0 kg worth of biomaterial in any given instance and since these are made of organic matter, they will always be vulnerable to debilitation and/or decimation by any force which can normally injure and/or destroy organic matter. Apart from that, the biomaterial golems he makes will always be easily distinguishable as unnatural constructs since his ability does not have the capacity to make the golems be exact doppelgangers of their natural counterparts. For the healing aspect, he can use it only on himself and cannot heal any damage done to vital organs, specifically the heart and the brain, and beyond that he also cannot heal wounds such as complete avulsions, complex fractures, perforating injuries of any kind, as well as complete organ/body part/body region destruction from external sources.

Budding Physician-Scientist Knowledge + Skills (Albeit a Mad One):
Faustein has long since been engaged in the comprehensive and rigorous study of all the various STEM subjects and is being trained to be a formal researcher too. So, he possesses all the skills and knowledge associated with these, of both the theoretical and practical kind to varying degrees, but is most skilled in, knowledgeable about, and conversant with the medicosurgical type subjects of the full STEM set. Of course, he can never match true professional in these fields due to not having their level of exposure.

Faustein has been obsessed with playing strategy games of various kinds for a long time and has perused many of the literature produced over the ages on strategy and tactics used throughout human history. Ah…this is…troublesome…is it…morning already?

Faustein mused silently with his mind still very much groggy from the impromptu crash it suffered after pulling three consecutive all-nighters due to the latest and even more complicated than before research project he had been assigned by his superiors at Utagawashi. However, the morning sunbeams that were streaming through the slit between the thick drapes adorning his windows were not going to let him sleep in any longer as his position on his plush and thick mattress-bearing, king-sized bed meant that they were falling directly on his face.

Egads…stupid sun…choosing to shine right on my face…oh well…no choice, I suppose…

Faustein grumbled under his breath as he forced his equally out of commission body to awaken and move out of his oh so comfy bed despite all the protesting it was doing against the activation orders that he was making his brain give its muscles. After that, he shambled about his fancy dorm room which he was staying at thanks to being one of the students at Nagatenjouki Academy which he was currently attending as a high school senior, getting himself ready to face yet another irksome day. Due to his currently lackadaisical mood and vestigial lethargy from being rather sleep-deprived for the past three days, it took him a while to finish readying himself with the usual daily panoply of attire, personal equipment, and so on that he always tended to carry with him wherever he went to be prepared for as many contingencies as possible. However, he did finally finish after a few hours and once that was done, Faustein slung his backpack on and headed out of his dorm.

Now then, what would be the fastest route to school? Hmm, I do not wish to exhaust myself so early in the day, so…perhaps a taxi ride is in order…

With that thought in mind, he hailed a taxi, got in, and let it drive him all the way to Nagatenjouki Academy. After that, the rest of his day was standard like it was every other day as in he attended all the usual classes in his schedule, hung out poring over experiments and so on during science lab, did poorly as usual during P.E. and so on. That took the better part of the day but finally, sometime in the afternoon, his school day was finished at last, but he still had another engagement to take care of, that being his ESPer Power Development Curriculum training for that day. Fortunately, he did not have to go outside the Nagatenjouki Academy campus as said institution was elite enough to have its own research lab for the ESPer Power Development Curriculum training of the ESPers among its students.

“Mr. Kuroyakushi, ah you are finally here. Well then, you will see the challenges and puzzles set for you in today’s training regimen on the chart in the holder affixed to the wall right outside and next to door leading into Experiment Chamber #3 as per usual. We would like you to initiate today’s training procedures as soon as possible.”

Faustein merely nodded and replied briefly to the researchers who had accosted him and who had been overseeing his ESPer power development ever since he enrolled in Nagatenjouki Academy

“Understood.”

Then, after they left, he moved on to the experimental chamber mentioned as per his usual routine whenever he was called to the facility and upon arrival, he saw the chart and read over it, again like he had done every other time he had been there.

Now then, what do we have here?...”Scenario: You are in pursuit of an opposing ESPer who has a terrakinesis type ESPer ability and said ESPer raises a large, thick wall from the ground to obstruct your pursuit path and to obscure your view of him/her. You are to apprehend said ESPer as swiftly as possible. Challenge: Devise a means of resuming pursuit via the use of your biomaterial golems as soon as possible.”….Hmm, how quaint…but I for one, am certainly not going to complain about a facile task such as this…

Faustein mused silently as he read over the note on the chart in his hand and then entered the experiment chamber and activated the VR environment and challenge creation setup as was his usual routine and soon, he was engaged in taking on the challenge mentioned in the note on the chart.

A wall…too high to scale efficiently so a serpent-type would not be applicable…an avian-type, then? Hmm, no…too small to carry me over the top of the wall…Ah yes, I know…a mole-type with a rotating bony drill-type head to it…that should suffice…but the avian-type will be useful for pursuing the target.

With that plan in mind, Faustein set about creating the golems he had thought up the plans for just now. It took him 10 seconds to create a small flock of avian-type biomaterial golems which were essentially just a large maw for the body with two stalk eyes on top, large bat wings with one on each side of the maw body, and finally bird feet on the bottom of the maw body and these totaled 12.0 kg collectively. Then, he sent those on ahead to pursue the fleeing target after which he took 30 seconds to create the driller mole-type which weighed 15.0 kg but was a single unit instead. He then directed this mole-type golem to drill into and break down the wall obstructing his path after which he resumed pursuit of the target in question who was currently trying to fight off the avian golems he sent on ahead in pursuit. Upon arrival, he did not waste any more time and switched the avian golems to manual control after which he directed them to subdue the target ESPer and so completed the ESPer Power Development challenge for the day and at last, was able to head home while looking forward to a nice, long rest.

I gotta admit, the formatting doesn’t work in favour of the reading experience on this one. Buuuut I’ll try to give you my verdict nonetheless ☆


The Basic – Absolute Nitpicking

Let’s start with some run-the-mill nitpicking, shall we?

I don’t think any higher authority in Japan would address someone by a nickname – especially not someone like the Board of Directors (which kind of makes me wonder how he got into contact with them in the first place). Therefore, I’d say the standard choice of addressing him officially would be by his last name and the typical honourifics.

Beyond that I can’t help but wonder how one can have this many distinguishing features. I’d say that’s pretty over the top under this scale. So, shouldn’t it be that he is a walking oddity at this point?


The Personality – The Troubles of Evil Scientisting

Throughout the forum’s history we’ve had a few folks attempt the mad scientist character type and at this point it’s fairly common to meet this with the same question: How would he play out in social interactions? From the sounds of it he is basically is not the type for any of these, which – given the format of this forum and its threads – could turn out rather problematic for you.


The Ability – Back to the Balance Sheet

I warned you about this via the chat, but I’ll gladly pick this topic back up in an actual evaluation: Once upon a time in a past evaluation my predecessor Index raised a valuable point about character balancing functioning similar to a simplified stat sheet, where you differentiate between Strength, Intelligence, and Esper Ability. In it she mentioned an approximate spread for some characters similar to this:

In such a setting Faustein appears to me like this:

Intelligence: 90
Strength: 50
Esper Ability: 90

With how he is a highly intelligent fellow with tactical and manipulative capabilities far above the average joe, while he can still hold his own against up to two Skill-Out thugs in hand to hand, and has a surprisingly versatile and powerful Esper ability which he knows how to exploit to the fullest. And, much like Index did in the case of Kyou Rindou, I, too, will have to tell you that this stat spread is quite out of bounds and should be adjusted to a more reasonable and realistic output, where his Esper ability, brains, and close combat prowess are adjusted to form a more balanced spread.


Beyond the general issue of balancing, the idea of an ability that enables its user to hack bodies (especially if applied onto other party’s bodies) enters a rather complicated domain. After all, we are speaking of a means that could potentially make the character applying the ability invulnerable or have them interfere with characters by inflicting unwanted far-reaching physical conditions that could possibly not be reversed, which kind of puts it into a similar situation to mind control.

Overall, while healing is a generally tolerable application, the higher level of it where he can potentially regrow limbs is something that appears extremely broken, given that any ever so grave injury could be recovered from momentarily. Similarly, any application of the ability where he can potentially alter another character’s body (especially in a negative sense) is – as explained earlier – too out of bounds and therefore not approvable. Further, the creation of golems from his own body can potentially cause problems depending on the size and monstrosity of them. After all, if he has the capability to manipulate flesh to this level of growth, he could also use that same degree of application on regeneration or physical improvements. Lastly, stat boosts could form another potential issue in line with the balancing sheet discussed earlier, where – in addition to other capabilities – he could also balance out his stat deficiencies and therefore artificially raise that strength stat in tandem to the Esper ability one – which if it was the ability’s only application could be deemed balance-able.

In addition the versatility of this ability exceeds what Esper abilities should be like. While you could reference people like Misaka Mikoto who, as Level 5 Espers, basically have no limit in the versatility of their ability, the majority of Espers is found to have explicit focus points, such as Offence Armour who can mainly force hydrogen to assume the form of an armour or Kill Point who can only teleport himself into people’s blind spots.

One possible solution to offer to the issue of the possible exploits of self-regeneration and stat boosts could lie in the downside of these processes demanding some form of stamina to be sacrificed for their execution.

Hence, I will offer you the following choices:

1. Either the ability can be used to create golems the collective size of up to a single Siberian husky and do the required level of healing to support it at the cost of his own physical and mental stamina,

2. the ability focusses entirely on the healing of wounds inflicted on others and himself and nothing beyond that, but could enable higher tier recovery options such as faster regrowth of limbs and similar things also at the cost of his own physical and mental stamina,

3. or it focusses exclusively on a balanced form of self-healing, stat-boosting, and nothing else with the same stamina drain as the other two.

In all cases, I would like you to revamp the range of the capabilities, where you either remove too powerful outputs or alter the application times (as some of these take way too long even on the acceptable levels). Similarly, while you gave an overly extensive list of limitations, I do not see one related to the time he can keep the golems alive.

Once these numbers have been provided and you’ve decided which path to take with the ability, I’ll then go over these limitations with you. Ideally, though, you should work on making them sound less restrictive. The way they’re right now is far too convoluted to work in a run-the-mill RP scenario as we tend to have them.
